Na festivalu za vikend sve je grčko

Dvjesto kilograma mljevenog junetine. Sto dvadeset kilograma grčkih makarona. Osamdeset kilograma luka.

Pokrijte dno duboke posude s umakom s nekim listovima grožđa. Rasporedite valjane dolmade u slojeve, čvrsto ih pakirajte, šavom okrenutom prema dolje. Kiflice preliti kipućom vodom, poprskati maslinovim uljem i premazati maslacem (nije obavezno).

Postepeno umiješajte limunov sok i vodu.

Operite i izrežite patlidžan. Isperite, nežno stisnite i osušite.

Ogulite i narežite krompir debljine pola centimetra.

Musaku prelijte umakom i pecite oko 45 minuta dok lijepo ne porumeni. Ostavite da odstoji 15 minuta pre serviranja.

Monterey”s first Japanese American Heritage Days revives fishing history

MONTEREY >> The Japanese were once major players in the fishing industry of the Monterey Peninsula, and this weekend they will be celebrated in a new two-day event, Japanese American Heritage Days, on Old Fisherman”s Wharf.

Larry Oda, past national president of the Japanese American Citizens League, said the festival revives a history that has been pretty much forgotten.

“Prior to World War II, the Japanese had a commanding presence on the wharf,” said Oda. “The majority of the businesses were either owned or operated by Japanese. With World War II and the so-called evacuation of the Japanese from the West Coast, that presence on the wharf ended.”

The idea of the festival originated last fall with archivist, historian and Japanese league board member Tim Thomas.

“I was looking for a way to celebrate the Maiwai jacket coming here,” he said, referring to a ceremonial jacket given to fishermen after a really good season, a tradition that goes back centuries. “I saw they were doing a Columbus Day event to celebrate the Italians, so I went to their board and said we should do something about the Japanese.”

A recreation of the Monterey abalone jacket, hand-crafted and painted, will be presented during a ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday. There are two originals of the jacket, one in Japan and one in the Monterey league”s museum.

“I thought a couple years ago they”re so scarce, I thought we could get them recreated,” Thomas said.

The festival also includes a number of abalone-themed events, including a cooking demonstration and poetry competition.

“Everything began with abalone,” said Thomas, whose new book “The Abalone King of Monterey: ”Pop” Ernest Doelter, Pioneering Japanese Fishermen and the Culinary Classic that Saved an Industry,” will be released this month.

Without the abalone, Thomas said, sardine fisheries would not have existed. Japanese fishermen came here to dive for abalone and salmon and brought new technology with them.

“It”s been forgotten,” he said. “This is a good opportunity for us to bring that back, that history.”

Pop Ernest started a restaurant and began to “experiment with abalone when no one around here knew what to do with it,” Thomas said. He dreamed up a famous recipe where the abalone is pounded and breaded and cooked with olive oil, and he introduced fresh abalone steak to the world.

Cooking demonstrations are part of the festival, along with ikebana and bonsai demonstrations, a historic photo exhibit of Japanese fishermen in Monterey, Taiko drums and other live musical performances, historic walking tours and the jacket ceremony, which includes a parade with dignitaries and lion dancers heading from the wharf to the Japanese league hall. Wharf restaurants will serve small bites of Japanese dishes.

“I think it”ll be a really a good time,” Thomas said. “I think it will attract a lot of tourists, but will be good for the community.”

Oda”s father and grandfather were both fishermen, and he has lived in Monterey all of his life.

“It”s been a little journey of discovery of myself, learning about what happened,” he said. “Older folks told me, ”I remember your grandfather”s cannery.”” (It”s now a wing of the aquarium.)

After World War II was winding down, the Japanese were allowed to return to their homes, in Salinas, but people didn”t want them to come back. In 1942 resolutions passed in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, discouraging the Japanese from returning.

“In Monterey a group felt that we had as much right to come and live here and work in whatever industry we wanted. A signed petition welcomed the Japanese back,” Oda said.

Oda is most excited about the festival”s demonstrations, including Tukutu (fish stenciling), which started off as a practical way of measuring and documenting fish that were caught.

“It will be a lot of activities for adults and children, such as origami and learning how to arrange flowers and make miniature trees,” he said.

Thomas is looking forward to a “Pop” Earnest lookalike contest and the poetry contest. The prize will be a copy of his book.

There will also be six “honored guests” coming from Tatiama, Japan.

“The wharf people are talking about this becoming an annual event. They want to start doing more and more of these things I”ve been pushing them a lot. It draws people onto the wharf,” Thomas said. “The wharf is not just a bunch of restaurants and T-shirt shops. There”s a reason why it”s there.”

There will be a reception at the league hall after the Maiwai ceremony, and the building”s museum will be open.

“Look at the phone book &mdash a lot of the Japanese were represented on the wharf,” Oda said. “That”s why their parents and grandparents came to the United States. It”s a nice recognition for them.”

Olive Festival canceled for 2018

As we all launch into the fall — a time when many of us look to fortify our social and cultural schedules — we just want to give everyone a “heads-up” that there will not be a San Benito Olive Festival this year. We understand that there will be widespread disappointment on this count, but it’s important that this well anticipated family event be staged in an ever more professional and comprehensive way.

The past four years of SBOF festivals have been a great success in creating our wonderful sense of place. They have enabled countless local residents (not to mention nationwide and worldwide folks) to see and meet — some for the first time — the many talented artisans, creators, farmers, ranchers, chefs and entertainers that call this region home. To date, these joyful festivals have been brought together in a “grass roots” fashion — thanks to boundless, donated hours of hard work by MANY many dedicated individuals. Every festival is a yearlong “labor of love” for board members, committee chairs, and mighty “boots-on-the-ground” volunteers. Over and above all of the festival deadlines and commitments, there is also the day-to-day running of the SBOF 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The value of this unique festival is obvious, but the work load adds up — especially when most everyone has a full-time job, families to nurture, and outside lives to attend to. Without a full-time (or even part-time) manager/executive director to navigate, we collectively didn’t have the necessary time to pull together and orchestrate the quality event that everyone has come to expect.

Growing pains and realizations: At this point in its growth, the organization needs funding for an administrator — someone to manage the daily tasks, to research and apply for grants, to keep current on nonprofit regulations and updates, to organize and oversee the 20-plus committees, the 70-plus participants, and to maintain our valued relationships with many generous sponsors and 200-plus volunteers (mostly recruited by awesome non-profit organizations).

We’re extremely grateful to all those who care deeply about our community and have worked tirelessly (days plus nights) to make these exuberant Olive Festivals possible thus far! Our amazing decorators, especially — the talented designers and painters who consistently stepped up and transformed huge blank open spaces into gorgeous, harvest-style country festivals with stylish VIP Tasting areas. These beautiful settings helped SBOF to welcome all attendees into a magical San Benito County experience. Families, friends and foodies met up to taste award winning olive oils, world class wines and craft beers while sampling yummy treats along with being entertained by cooking demonstrations. Explorers of all ages reveled in local arts and crafts, olive wreath making, flower arranging, pumpkin painting, scarecrow building, music and dance performances. A great day for all participants to reach out and connect with the fabulous people and small businesses that make our county extraordinary.

For some of the 20-plus nonprofit organizations that made the festivals possible, it was a nice opportunity to meet potential donors and to reach out to new volunteers. For our olive growers, wine makers, craft brewers, farmers, food producers, merchants, artists and performers, it was a perfect stage to showcase their creations as well as share their passion, stories and processes. We were also very fortunate to have famous executive chefs, as well as, knowledgeable chefs from professional culinary academies and local schools, who could join us — bringing their culinary arts expertise, focusing on local ingredients, and then pairing these masterpieces with our region’s most delicious wines.

In order for the next Olive Festival to take place, to celebrate our endearing area and diverse talents, there is much work to be done. We’re looking for funding to make the aforementioned organizational manager or executive director a reality for SBOF. We’re also seeking active/working board members, committee chairs, and sponsors to help us in the growth process as we move forward.

In the meantime (in anticipation of the next Olive Festival), the remarkable photographer, Hanna Smith, has kindheartedly donated all of her photos from the 2017 Olive Photo booth. We will upload these large-size photos, one a day, onto the San Benito Olive Festival Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/sanbenitoolivefestival so that everyone can share smiles in the memory of our most recent past festival — and can, also, embrace the future festivals — where many more delightful San Benito memories will be created.

Our sincere thanks to all, including news media, food publications/bloggers, for your tremendous support.

First Olive Festival in San Benito, California - Recipes

  • Published 11/04/2018
  • mc_02

This article was contributed by San Benito High School student Malia Chang with the BenitoLink Junior Journalism project.

I am 15 years old and have been raised in a community of volunteering. The first time I volunteered was when I was five years old, at Holte dinners hosted by Sacred Heart on Thanksgiving, where I served dinner rolls. It was amazing to see someone&rsquos face light up when they were served a meal, and I wanted to continue to see that expression of joy in others. Since then, I have volunteered almost every year on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As a student, I have been involved with volunteering at important events. While in elementary school, I volunteered in a preschool classroom. The Olive Festival is a popular event I would volunteer at with my mom and dad, teaching others how to make olive wreaths.

Nowadays I volunteer to protect our environment by going to beach cleanups and going to Snowy Plover Mud Stomps to help snowy plovers to create a nest for their eggs. The third Sunday of the month at Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos, my family and I serve donuts and coffee.

Another event I volunteer for is the Immaculate Conception Church barbecue.

The parish held its 80th annual barbecue on Oct. 21. My family and I have been fortunate enough to participate in organizing the raffle drawing for the past two years. We make sure that tickets for the drawing are sent out to each member of the parish and contact local businesses for prize donations and contributions. Volunteering for the church barbecue allows me to appreciate all the behind-the-scenes work that is required to create an incredible fundraising event.

I see the dedication put into the barbecue and how important this event is to parishioners. Those who make the food get up extremely early to start the fire to cook chicken. Days in advance, parishioners make the pasta sauce and salad dressing. From listening to the discussion in meetings every week for a few months, I learn about the time and effort put into choosing what games will be available to the children, arrangements for parking, what will be served at the barbecue, and the serving size for each menu item.

When the day of the barbecue comes, all the volunteers are running around ensuring everything is perfect. At the end of the day, everyone leaves with smile on their faces, appreciating the great job everyone did. The fundraiser will continue with the participation of members of Tres Pinos Immaculate Conception Church, who put so much effort and love into this work.

Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard

On Monday, March 22 2021, Saundra “Sandy” Sue Copeland Winokur passed peacefully from this world while at her home in Elmendorf, Texas near San Antonio after a long illness.

Sandy is preceded in death by her husband, Stephen C. Winokur, her father, H.E. Copeland and her mother, Virginia Copeland. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Gail Bartlett, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, her nephews, Edward Fuller Butler III, of Tallahassee, Florida, Michael Brennan Butler of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jack Butler of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Miles Kehoe of New Orleans, Louisiana, her nieces, Virginia Butler Kehoe, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Kate Kehoe of New Orleans, Louisiana, Claire Kehoe of New Orleans, Louisiana, Brennan Butler of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Isabel Butler of Tallahassee, Florida.

Sandy was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 9, 1939.

Sandy graduated from Austin College. After receiving her teaching certification, she taught in Texas, California, and in Europe. Sandy graduated with a M.A. from Texas Christian University, a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at Bowling Green State University. After receiving her Ph.D., Sandy taught psychology as a university professor for several years at TCU and other colleges. Sandy then relocated with her late husband to Chicago and New York City where she took art classes and developed her innate talent for visual arts. She was adept at painting, drawing, and sculpture. Sandy also illustrated several children’s books.

Sandy had a passion for travel and was particularly captivated by Tuscany, with its magnificent landscape and verdant olive groves. In 1995, Sandy, a proud Texan, purchased acreage in Elmendorf on fallow land near San Antonio. Sandy had lived and travelled all over the world, but Texas remained her beloved home. Descended from six generations of Texas ranchers, Sandy had a dream of establishing an olive farm much like the ones she said seen in Italy and Spain. Sandy defied the naysayers and skeptics who told her that it was impossible to commercially cultivate olives in Texas. After a difficult start, Sandy not only successfully grew olives on her Sandy Oaks Ranch, she also harvested enough olives to press her own olive oil, and manufactured many culinary and cosmetic products from her productive groves. Sandy eventually added a restaurant, guided tours, and event planning to her Sandy Oaks Ranch and became a fixture in the San Antonio community, where she belonged to several philanthropic and culinary organizations. Years after leaving the classroom, Sandy still perceived herself as educator and gave many lectures on the challenges and joys of olive cultivation in Texas. Sandy generously shared her knowledge with those who also had a passion for olives. Sandy, who loved teaching and art, stated “I am still teaching, I just have a different venue and I am still doing art, this land is my canvas.”

Sandy treated everyone with dignity and compassion. She remained eternally optimistic and full of good cheer despite a long struggle with cancer. She was beloved by her family, friends, colleagues, and employees. Sandy touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the SPCA and the American Cancer Society.
